HISTORY

For over five decades, Pate International Design has created the visual identities and packaging for several of the world’s most notable luxury beverage brands.

Founded in 1976 by Susan Pate, the firm began working with a pioneering generation of vintners who were redefining what American wine could be. As Napa Valley rose from an emerging wine region to one of the most celebrated in the world, the designs and imagery created by Pate International helped introduce these wines to the global stage.

Early collaborations with Robert Mondavi, Baron Philippe de Rothschild and Count Frederic Chandon placed Pate International at the center of Napa Valley’s transformation from a promising region into one recognized among the world’s finest wine producers. The bestselling book The House of Mondavi chronicles the development of these legendary brands and the role design played in shaping their identity.

Many of the world’s most recognized wine labels have originated from the studio’s work. Long-standing collaborations with visionary vintners have produced enduring brands such as Opus One, Harlan Estate, Robert Mondavi Winery, Quintessa, BOND, Domaine Chandon, Promontory, and Luce—brands that helped define the modern luxury wine category. Many of these visual identities have remained in continuous use for decades, becoming enduring symbols of some of Napa Valley’s most celebrated wines.

While Napa Valley remains the foundation of the studio’s work, Pate International has long partnered with wineries, spirits producers, and luxury brands internationally, with projects spanning the Americas, Europe, and Asia.

As a new generation assumes leadership across many of Napa Valley’s legacy estates and new brands emerge to serve the contemporary consumer, Pate International continues to evolve alongside them. Susan’s daughter, Chloe Pate, now guides the studio’s work—continuing the legacy of excellence established by its founder.
